A teen may obtain a drivers license in the State of Washington at the age of 16, with the following requirements

*Must have your permit for at least six month.

*Pass a state approved driver education course.

*Have 50 hours of behind-the-wheel training including 10 hours of nighttime driving with a parent or guardian.

*Pass a knowledge test.

*Pass a driving test.

A teen may obtain a permit at the age of 15 as long as they are enrolled in a state approved driver education course, or at the age of 15 1/2 they may take the knowledge test to obtain their permit.   

Intermediate Drivers Licesnse (IDL) 

This is the license that teens will receive at the age of 16, and they must follow specific rules and restrictions.

*For the first six months you can not drive with any passengers under the age of 20, unless they're in your immediate family.

*For the next six months you can have up to three passengers under the age of 20, who aren't members of your immediate family.

Nighttime Driving

For the first 12 months you can't drive between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless you are with a license driver 25 years of age or older.

Cell Phones

You are not permitted to use wireless devices while driving, even with a hands-free device.  This includes talking on cell phones and sending or receiving text messages.  You may only use a wireless device to report an emergency.
